Here Furtwängler departs from the world of Beethoven and, with the complicity of the Vienna Philharmonic, dips into Gluck’s Alceste and Ravel’s Spain, the concert culminating with the conflicting Germanic trio -Wagner, Brahms and Mahler (the latter he tended to neglect in the concert hall yet emulate as a composer).
