ROBERT SCHUMANN LEGACY BY WILHELM FURTWÄNGLER
Furtwängler was an excellent pianist and accompanied leading singers at opera rehearsals and lieder recitals by Wolf, Schubert, Schumann…. He did not consider Schumann to be a great symphony composer, yet refused to authenticate Mahler’s re-orchestrations of Symphony N° 2 and 3 (which appeared posthumously in 1927). Here we have what Furtwängler chose to bequeath to posterity, including his consummate, and as yet unparalleled, lebhaft peroration in Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor, his so-called Op. 120.
