The 'Russian Furtwängler' left legendary readings of works by Tchaikovsky, such as MOSCOW, a cantata commissioned for the coronation of Alexander III, heard here with a 'Sovietized' text by Mashistov, erasing imperial and religious references. A gem in the epic style of the archaistic Russian Baroque, it is constructed like a flamboyant bylina of forgotten splendour. He also left authentic, refined visions of the '1812' Overture, without added 'artillery', and two pieces too rarely heard: The Voyevoda, an amazingly modern symphonic ballad, and the Shakespearean Tempest in its original edition.
