24 April 2009 marks the jubilee of one of the rare concerts given in Moscow by Mravinsky with ‘his’ Leningrad Philharmonic. The ’Unfinished’ is worthy of comparison with Furtwängler’s recordings in Berlin (live, 1950) and Vienna (EMI, 1951). In Tchaikovsky, the most implacable vision of the 4th Symphony, in his repertoire as of 1938, comes back to life. One is unsure of witnessing a funeral ritual or rite close to sacrifice.
