Sergeï PROKOFIEV (1891-1953) : CHAMBER MUSIC (HUMORESQUE, QUINTET, CLASSICAL SYMPHONY,..) -CZ Nonet

In stock

An original ‘miniature’ portrait of the enfant terrible of ‘cosmopolitan’ Russian music in the years of ‘freedom’ (1910-35), seemingly as unsentimental as capable of the most lyrical outbursts, an often-naive caricaturist respecting classical rules with the greatest formal strictness whilst making ‘the silly geese squawk’ with his irrepressible need to provoke every conformist fashion.

MRAVINSKY : YEVGENY MRAVINSKY IN MOSCOW 24 April 1959

24 April 2009 marks the jubilee of one of the rare concerts given in Moscow by Mravinsky with ‘his’ Leningrad Philharmonic. The ’Unfinished’ is worthy of comparison with Furtwängler’s recordings in Berlin (live, 1950) and Vienna (EMI, 1951). In Tchaikovsky, the most implacable vision of the 4th Symphony, in his repertoire as of 1938, comes back to life. One is unsure of witnessing a funeral ritual or rite close to sacrifice.

W. A. MOZART (1756-1791) : FLUTE QUARTETS & CONCERTO - Y. Oshima, KOCIAN Quartet, PRAGA Camerata

In stock

An anthology of Mozart’s only original works for flute, initiated by a commission by a ‘Dutchman from the Indies’, an amateur flautist to whom we also owe the Quartet in D and the Concerto in G, taking inspiration from and paying tribute to the instrumentalist-composers pf the Mannheim School, in particular his host, Johann Baptist Wendling (1723-1797), a talented flautist and emulator of Quantz. Yoshimi Oshima returns to the capital of Bohemia and his friends from the Kocian Quartet to record these summits of the Classical literature for transverse flute with a single key (notes with sharps) with a full and even sonority, accurate and virtuoso, that would have delighted the composer.

Nicolai RIMSKY-KORSAKOV (1844-1908) : QUINTET PIANO & WINDS - SEXTET - Kocian Quartet, Wind Quintet

An original but logical pairing of these works written jointly in 1876 for a competition organised by the Russian Music Society. ‘The jury found my sextet worthy of an honourable mention but did not take my quintet into account.’ In a sort of posthumous revenge, he might point out that the name of the winner, Eduard Nápravník (1838-1916), is barely known outside of musical reference works.
