Richter’s creative flair uplifts hitherto neglected pieces by Tchaikovsky on a par with these operatic scenes from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Although in 1874-78 both composers were influenced by Schumann and the Russian passion for Salonstück, the juxtaposition of a hallucinatory musical experience with neat little pieces by a sentimental composer adds surprising piquancy.
